Frequently Asked Questions
We're here to help
We require a safe, clear teaching area that is at least 25x25 square feet. For parties of more than 50 participants, we recommend a larger space if that is possible. We can teach indoors or outdoors, weather permitting, however we expect outdoor areas to be shaded during the height of the day and we cannot teach on grass or gravel surfaces. We require access to the teaching and performance area 30 minutes prior to our first contribution to your event.
In addition to the teaching and performance space, we require a safe space to leave changes of shoes, bags, and other small gear we have brought with us. If we are performing any demos or spotlights, or if there are specific costume requirements for the event, we also require a place to leave costume pieces and do our costume changes.
If your event has parking restrictions, we require clear direction for vendor parking for your event, to be available at our planned arrival time (30 minutes before our first contribution to your event, unless you have organized standby time with us).
We generally expect that your venue has an integrated sound system and accepts MP3 files from a standard flash drive. If we are preparing a curated playlist for you, we expect to be able to share a Spotify playlist with you ahead of the event, and that you have the means to play it (without ads). We also expect that there is someone present during the event who knows how to operate the sound system, whether that be a DJ for the whole event, or just someone there to press 'Play' for us now and then.
For parties larger than 20, we also expect at least one microphone. If given the option, we prefer a single handheld microphone or two wireless headsets.
If you would like us to be more involved with the technical details of the music and sound at your event, please let us know and we may be able to do so. This usually requires an additional fee, which will be calculated on a case-by-case basis.
While we are predominantly partner dancing instructors, we are excited to tailor your group lessons to the specifics of your event. If your event is for couples or people who don't mind dancing in partnerships with other attendees, we can offer a more standard ballroom dancing lesson focusing on any of the dances we teach. If your event includes more singles, we can teach a lesson that can be danced both with a partner and solo in the style of a line dance.
If your event is themed, we'd love to incorporate your theme into our lesson planning. For a historical ball we might take inspiration from Regency court dance, and for a fantasy gathering we might plan a folk-inspired hobbit romp. Let us know your inspiration and we'd love to work with you!
Unless you inform us otherwise, we will prepare a lesson that is accessible to and fun for people with no prior dance experience.
The short answer is... it depends. We encourage you to share any inspiration with us so we can provide entertainment that is perfect for your event. Depending on your package selection and the other details of your event, we will use our best judgment to see if the moves that inspire you will work as they are, or as inspiration, at our discretion.
That being said, we will not perform choreography that is copied wholesale from another source. We are happy to use such material as inspiration, but we wish to make our performances our own.
We do our best to keep everyone safe at any event we participate in. Our private event lessons are designed to be accessible to and fun for people with no dance experience. However, dancing is inherently a physical activity that involves other people moving around the space, which means accidents can occur.
In the event of an injury, we will always prioritize the safety of the injured party over our lesson plan. This may mean pausing the lesson until the injury is assessed, or stopping it altogether in extreme cases. We will do our best to get the party rolling again as quickly as possible once everyone is safe.
Neither Syncopation Studios nor the individual instructors can be held liable for any injury that occurs while following our instruction at your private event.
We require a 50% down payment at the time of booking. We expect the second half of the payment at the event or within 24 hours of completion.
We accept cash, check, and Venmo for payment.
We require notice of at least 7 days to receive your cancellation. Cancellations less than 7 days before the event will forfeit your deposit.
If your event is cancelled due to weather, illness, or other unforeseen circumstances, we offer a free reschedule of our services to the next mutually available date.
We are able to book up to a year in advance, so we encourage you to start working out details with us as soon as possible. We do require a rush fee of 20% for any Essential or Standard package booked less than 1 week in advance and any Premium package booked less than a month in advance.
